The first of the urban SPAs; When it was declared in 2003, it consisted only of the Church of La Purificación, in Gothic style and whose Almendros tower was destroyed in 1936 during the Civil War, being restored in the same year. Most of the pairs are in artificial nest boxes, under cover and outdoors, which have been installed over the years by the NGO DEMA, housing 80 of the 100 pairs estimated for this SPA. Subsequently, the SPA was expanded to include other areas surrounding the church that were also interesting for the primilla.

Almendralejo is located in Tierra de Barros, in whose surroundings there are suitable hunting grounds for the species, with open crops of vines, olive trees and cereals. However, in a study carried out by DEMA with LIFE funding, it was determined that the median and shoulders of the A6 highway, close to the town, are key areas for feeding the couples in this SPA. An observation area has been set up, installing a spy glass that allows the colony to be observed from a privileged place without interfering with reproduction.
