Archeological Burial of Huerta Montero
The Prehistoric Sepulcher of Huerta Montero, one of Extremadura’s most unique tombs, is remarkably well-preserved.
It was constructed by excavating up to 2 meters into the caliche and spans 15.40 meters.
Dating back 4650 years, it served as a collective burial site for approximately 1000 years, containing the remains of around 115 individuals.
Not merely a burial site, the tomb’s orientation enables sunlight to illuminate the chamber during the winter solstice, a ceremony performed to offer the new sun’s light to the departed.
The tomb’s construction showcases our ancestors’ profound understanding of their surroundings, effectively utilizing the materials at their disposal.
